About Us

AAW was formed in the summer of 2013 by a group of individuals from Dane County. In early 2014 AAW became an initiative of Dane County Pheasants Forever (DCPF). AAW became a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization unto itself in May of 2017.

Our objective is to provide recreational opportunities for physically challenged people, including wheelchair users, who want to enjoy the Wisconsin outdoors.

Consider -

  • There are 5.7 million acres of public land in Wisconsin
  • Over 500,000 people in Wisconsin have some sort of disability which limits their access to that public land
  •  There are proven benefits of outdoor recreation that everyone should be able to enjoy!
GOALS -

We have achieved our initial goal of acquiring "one" chair for Dane County in 2014. Thanks to a grants awarded (see our "Thank You" page) and support from the community, we now have fifteen outdoor wheelchairs available for reserving. Click on the Reservations tab to start the process to reserve one of these outdoor wheelchairs.

These chairs are available for all ages and those with temporary or permanent mobility issues. Our clients have been daily wheelchair users, those with walking difficulties, kids, and adults from 21 to 65+.

Our continuing goals within Dane County and throughout Wisconsin are to work with -
  1. Individuals and organizations to use our outdoor all-terrain wheelchairs (OWC)
  2. Organizations to host chairs (see AAW's Host Application and Memorandum of Agreement listed in the footer or contact us to ask about AAW's them.)
so that anyone with a physical disability may have access an outdoor wheelchair as needed.
